Takapuna beach cup - auckland update
Kia ora koutou
We hope you are all well, as many of you may be aware, Auckland has been experiencing some severe weather patterns.
There was severe flooding last week that impacted thousands of people and has closed beaches across Auckland due to sanitation and debris issues. And now we have Cyclone Gabrielle on its way and likely to hit us over the weekend.
We are monitoring the situation regularly and are in contact with the local city council. At this stage, it looks like things will improve in time for Takapuna Beach Cup. We will keep you all updated with regular email updates as any new information comes to hand.
Feel free to let us know if you have any questions at takapunabeachcup@wakaama.co.nz

Added divisions to the 42km and 21km - J19 Men, Women and Mixed!

Currently the Waka Ama NZ Race rules enable paddlers who are turning 16 in the year of competition to take part in open ocean events. However, there has never been a specific J19 division for these paddlers at the Takapuna Beach Cup and these aged 16-19 have had to compete in the Open division.
The introduction of J19 Division will enable bonafide J19 teams to compete in the 42km and 21km events.
Additional Junior Division Rules: (all general 42km rules apply):
21km all rules apply
http://www.takapunabeachcup.com/21km-half-iron-race.html
These divisions will be eligible for prize money if the division meets the prizemoney criteria.

Takapuna Beach Cup 2021 - Cancelled
and In light of the latest COVID-19 developments, it is with disappointment that we announce that the Takapuna Beach Cup, scheduled for 20th and 21st February is cancelled.
With Auckland currently in level 3 for at least 72hours, there is the very high possibility that the region will be in at least level 2 or level 3 on the 20th February. We have made the decision to cancel the event now in the interest of safety and so that those participating from outside of Auckland have sufficient time to cancel their travel and accommodation plans.
All entry fees will be refunded in full this week.
We would like to thank everyone for their support of the Takapuna Beach Cup. We had huge numbers of participants entered from throughout Aotearoa this year and it was on target to be a great weekend!
The dates for next years Takapuna Beach Cup are 18, 19 & 20 February 2022.
Please stay safe whānau and if you have any questions please email takapunabeachcup@wakaama.co.nz

Please save the dates Friday 19th Feb to Sun 21st Feb 2021
Sadly, due to the impact of COVID-19, we are uncertain if we can welcome our international outrigger whānau to Aotearoa. We will try and keep you as updated as we can of the current conditions in Aotearoa but at present, our borders are heavily restricted - you can find more information here: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/about-us/covid-19/border-closures-and-exceptions
We are monitoring any changes with regard to COVID-19 moving forward, but we are well into the planning of the 2021 Takapuna Beach Cup and will be looking to host another world-class event for the 15th year running.
We want to take this opportunity to send our aroha and thoughts to our outrigger/va'a whānau from around the world at this time. We hope you and your family are keeping safe and well. We are looking forward to the next time we can all be back on the water, enjoying each other's company.

The Takapuna Beach Cup is New Zealand’s Premier 3-Day Outrigger Paddle Festival, attracting teams from throughout New Zealand and a feature event in the International Outrigger Circuit. The Event is run from Takapuna Beach and takes place during our best summer month, February.
E ngā māna tūārangi,
Nau mai, piki mai, kake mai ki runga i ngā ngaru o Aotearoa, hei whakamana i a mātou no konei, hei whakanui i a koutou katoa hōki. No reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa. |
Distinguished guests from afar.
Welcome and climb up and over the waves of Aotearoa. By doing so you honour us all and also enhance your own prestigious reputations. We therefore welcome you. |
The Takapuna Beach Cup which started in 2007 has become New Zealand’s premier long distance changeover race, and the backdrop of Auckland City and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf provide the perfect race course for this event.
There are not too many places in the world where one can paddle a race only 15 minutes from the central city CBD, around a dormant volcano (Te Rangi i totongia te ihu a Tama-te-kapua - Also known as: Rangitoto) and two other islands (Motutapu and Rakino) before returning to the golden sands of Takapuna Beach!
The sport of Waka Ama (Outrigger/Va’a) continues to grow, both here and around the globe, and we are pleased to have hosted teams from as far away as New York, Arizona, Japan, Singapore, Hawaii, Tahiti, Cook Islands and Australia!
Not to mention the teams and paddlers making the journey from throughout Aotearoa - from the Far North of the North Island to the Deep South of the South Island and everywhere in between.
Congratulations to the team of organizers and volunteers for growing this event to its current capacity. As the event enters its 15th year we look forward to many more years of Takapuna Beach Cup racing!
Although currently times are changing and challenging around the work we hope that we will be able to wlecome you back to the shores of Auckland and Aotearoa soon
