The Takapuna Beach Cup is New Zealand’s Premier 3-Day Outrigger Paddle Festival, attracting teams from throughout New Zealand and a feature event in the International Outrigger Circuit. The Event is run from Takapuna Beach and takes place during our best summer month, February.
E ngā māna tūārangi,
Nau mai, piki mai, kake mai ki runga i ngā ngaru o Aotearoa, hei whakamana i a mātou no konei, hei whakanui i a koutou katoa hōki. No reira, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou, tēnā koutou katoa. |
Distinguished guests from afar.
Welcome and climb up and over the waves of Aotearoa. By doing so you honour us all and also enhance your own prestigious reputations. We therefore welcome you. |
The Takapuna Beach Cup which started in 2007 has become New Zealand’s premier long distance changeover race, and the backdrop of Auckland City and the islands of the Hauraki Gulf provide the perfect race course for this event.
There are not too many places in the world where one can paddle a race only 15 minutes from the central city CBD, around a dormant volcano (Te Rangi i totongia te ihu a Tama-te-kapua - Also known as: Rangitoto) and two other islands (Motutapu and Rakino) before returning to the golden sands of Takapuna Beach!
The sport of Waka Ama (Outrigger/Va’a) continues to grow, both here and around the globe, and we are pleased to have hosted teams from as far away as New York, Arizona, Japan, Singapore, Hawaii, Tahiti, Cook Islands and Australia!
Not to mention the teams and paddlers making the journey from throughout Aotearoa - from the Far North of the North Island to the Deep South of the South Island and everywhere in between.
Congratulations to the team of organizers and volunteers for growing this event to its current capacity. As the event enters its 15th year we look forward to many more years of Takapuna Beach Cup racing!
Although currently times are changing and challenging around the work we hope that we will be able to wlecome you back to the shores of Auckland and Aotearoa soon
